Sebastian Clerk Maio retires; deputy tapped to fill gap

SEBASTIAN — With little discussion and no debate, the empty Sebastian City Clerk’s seat has been filled by Deputy Clerk Jeanette Williams, who spent 15 years under retiring Clerk Sally Maio.

Maio’s last official day is Friday.

“It’s up to us to select a new City Clerk,” Councilwoman Andrea Coy said during Wednesday’s Council meeting. She noted that in her tenure on the dais, the Council has selected two City Managers and one City Attorney – but never a City Clerk.

Coy nominated Williams to the Charter position, saying she was “tutored very, very well” by Maio and that it would “behoove us” to offer the job to Williams.

Councilman Jim Hill concurred.

“I agree 100 percent,” he said, adding that the City Manager and City Attorney should immediately begin contract negotiations with Williams.

But for the seeming support of the Council, one detail appeared missing.

“Did we ask her if she wants the job?” Hill asked, prompting laughter among the Council and the audience.

Coy said she had spoken to Williams privately.

“Do you want the job?” Coy asked from the dais.

“Yes,” Williams said.

With that, Council voted unanimously, 4-0, to approve Williams’s promotion from Deputy City Clerk. Vice Mayor Jerome Adams was absent from the meeting.
