Main Street Vero Beach features Adriana Bitter as artist of the month

VERO BEACH — Main Street Vero Beach Artist of the month of March is Adriana (Yana) Bitter.

The show of this well known local artist will hang from March 4-10th.

Adriana Teresa Maria Scalamandré feels that she has lived a wonderful life, full of excitement and great memories; however there are many new rivers to cross and mountains to climb.

As co-chair of Scalamandré Silks, Inc., her family company, Bitter brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the foremost manufacturer of fine fabrics, trimmings, wall coverings and carpet. She spent more than 60 years designing for Scalamandré and ultimately managing it with her husband, Edwin Bitter until they turned it over to their children.

Although she was born with a pencil in her hand, formal studies began as a child with the Italian artist, Mira and, and then continued her education at Marymount Academy where she was able to take the 4-year Marymount College Art program.

Bitter then attended Parson’s school of design in New York, while working at the Scalamandré Design Studio in LIC, New York. At 18 years of age Bitter spent one year under the tutelage of the cubist artist, Ozenfant, a student of Seurat.

During her years in the field of Interior Design, she won many awards such as the Trailblazer award, and the House Beautiful “Giants of Design Award.” She was a renowned lecturer and traveled throughout the world for inspiration. When the Bitters moved their winter home to Vero Beach, she was amazed at all the art, artists, art events and art clubs.

Bitter decided to concentrate her time in the field of art, painting in oils and watercolors. She is a board member at large for the Friends of the Vero Beach Museum of Art, and also served on the board of the Cultural Council. She takes great pride in her large family of four children, 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, with one more expected this year.
