Robert Lincoln Cooney, 82, of Vero Beach, passed away on March 9, 2016.
He is survived by his loving wife Anne; his son Robert Lincoln Cooney Jr. (Michelle) of Philadelphia, Penn.; his daughter Courtney Carroll Cooney (Christopher Solmssen) of San Francisco, Calif.; his stepdaughter Mary Stubbs Palmer (James Palmer) of Park City, Utah; his stepson William K. Stubbs III (Brooke) of Los Angeles, Calif.; and his much-loved grandchildren Meredith, Catherine and Amanda Cooney, Max, Philippa and Margaret Solmssen, Kingsley and Beckley Palmer and Lake Stubbs.
He is predeceased by his parents Dr. Edward Anthony Cooney and Lillian Carroll Cooney, his sister Carolyn Cooney Burns and his brother Edward Anthony Cooney Jr.
Cooney was a retired investment banker and devoted husband, father and friend. He resided in Vero Beach part-time since 1986 and full-time since 1999.
He was born in Boston, Mass., in 1934, and graduated from St. Sebastian’s School in Newton, Mass., in 1952 and the College of Holy Cross in 1956, where he was captain of the golf team.
Following college, he served as a photo-intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy on the USS Forrestal, retiring as a Lieutenant in 1959. After graduating from Harvard Business School in 1962, Cooney joined First Boston Corporation, an investment bank in New York, where he spent 27 of his 37 years on Wall Street, retiring in 1999 as a Managing Director in Equity Capital Markets.
He had a passion for finance and felt fortunate to have worked in a field he loved for almost 40 years. In retirement, Cooney served on the boards of BBH Exhibits Inc., Hoening Group Inc., Edison Control Corporation, and Equity One, Inc., a NYSE-listed shopping center REIT, where he served as Lead Director from 2003 to 2006. He also served as Chairman of the Investment Committee of the Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice House and of Trinity Episcopal Church, both in Vero Beach.
Outside of work and family, Cooney pursued his love of golf and the friendships it enabled throughout his lifetime. He was particularly fond of Scotland and was able to visit it often, including attending every British Open held at St. Andrews since 1990. At home, he played his golf as a member of John’s Island Club, Vero Beach, and Apawamis Club in Rye, N.Y.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice House, Vero Beach, the Cathedral of St. Patrick, New York, N.Y., or Trinity Episcopal Church, Vero Beach. A Celebration of Bob’s life will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, Vero Beach, FL at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2016.
