Theodore “Ted” Meyer, 80, of Vero Beach and Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2016.
He is survived by Karen Kramm Meyer, his beloved wife and friend of 55 years; his children Gregory B. Meyer (Tanya) of McLean, Va., Stephen J. Meyer (Louise) of Bethesda, Md., and Victoria E. Langerman (Scott), of Bethesda, Md.; grandchildren Michael, JT and Danny Meyer, Elizabeth, Katie and Lauren Meyer, and Jack, Jenny and Tom Langerman; as well as his sister Doris L. Meyer.
He was predeceased by his parents, Hans J. and Maria Louisa Xiques Meyer of Summit, N.J. and sister, Elinor Meyer Haupt (N. Harkness Haupt, Jr.).
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and raised in Summit, N.J., Meyer graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in 1957. While working as a chemical/petroleum engineer, he earned a Masters in Business Administration from Rutgers University in 1959. He then attended Cornell University Law School on a Teagle Scholarship from Esso Standard Oil Company, where he earned a J.D. (with distinction), was a member of Order of the Coif and Law Review Editor, and graduated first in his class in 1962.
For more than 30 years at the global law firm Jones Day in Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio, Meyer caringly advised leading corporations and helped other professionals to build their careers. He was made partner in the firm in 1970 and served for 10 years as Partner-in-Charge of the Columbus Office starting in 1985. Blessed with the opportunity to work with many talented and committed professionals over the years, he took great joy in this partnership with colleagues.
Meyer was active and passionate about ethical business, nature and the environment, and the power of music and theatre. He served on the Boards of the Ohio Business Roundtable, the Ohio-based Council for Ethics in Economics, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Planned Parenthood of Central Ohio, The Nature Conservancy (Ohio Chapter), New Albany Country Club, and Players Theatre Columbus.
His other civic involvements included leadership roles with St. Christopher-by-the-River Episcopal Church, The Country Club, and the Cleveland Bar Association/Securities Law Section, and membership in the Union Club in Cleveland and The Columbus Club. He also served as Co-Chairman of the Tocqueville Leadership Campaign of the United Way of Franklin County, Ohio.
Upon retiring from Jones Day in 2000, he and Karen increasingly spent time in Vero Beach where he served on the Boards of the Riverside Theatre and the Moorings Club, and belonged to Riomar Country Club.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 2 at 1 p.m. at St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church at 475 43rd Avenue in Vero Beach. A reception for family and friends will follow.
