Fight over hairbrush leads to mother’s arrest

FELLSMERE — A mother was arrested after beating her 14-year-old child during a fight about a hairbrush. 

Jessica Laboy was arrested around 8 p.m. Sunday, according to Fellsmere Police. They responded to Sonrise Square Apartment Complex. 

There was a physical altercation between her and her daughter, according to police. The incident started over a hairbrush, then Laboy threw the brush and struck the victim. She also threw the victim to the floor and held her down while choking her.

The 14-year-old fled the home and called police, the report states. 

Three other children were present during the fight, according to authorities. All of them were removed by the Department of Children and Families. 

Laboy faces one charge of felony child abuse, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office website. She is currently being held without bond.
