VERO BEACH — Firefighters and airport authorities are undergoing a series of training drills at the Vero Beach Regional Airport throughout today.
The agencies are conducting a “Live Burn” training exercise for Airport Firefighters. This training provides hands-on training in an actual fire situation for those firefighters that may be called upon to respond to an aircraft emergency on the airport.
“This high-quality, professional training is a reflection of the City’s dedication to the safety and protection of pilots and passengers who use Vero Beach Airport, as well as the many employees of our airport businesses” said Airport Director Eric Menger.
The burn training is one of 13 FAA-mandated subject areas, specific to aircraft operations, in which airport firefighters are required to receive training on an annual basis.
The training is being provided by the University of Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute, utilizing a Mobile Aircraft Rescue Firefighting Trainer (MARFT) owned by the Missouri Department of Transportation Aviation Department and operated by the University. The cost of the training is split 50/50 between Indian River County and the airport.
The training at Vero Beach Regional will last the entire day and be located on the main Terminal apron area, in front of CJ Cannon’s Restaurant.
The public is welcome to visit the airport, located at 3400 Cherokee Drive in Vero Beach, and observe the training in progress.
