Boil water notice still in effect for Vero Beach Utilities customers

VERO BEACH — The boil water notice is still in effect for City of Vero Beach water customers.

A notice sent out by the city called it a precautionary boil water notice. The results of the first day of tests around 1 p.m. did not show any contamination of bacteria. The notice will remain in effect for residents and businesses served by the Vero Beach water system until the second day of test results are received indicating no contamination. Those should be sometime Wednesday afternoon.

As a precaution, authorities are advising that all water used for drinking or cooking be boiled. 

Vero Beach Water-Sewer Director Rob Bolton at 9:46 p.m. Sunday night issued a “Precautionary Boil Water Notice” to all City of Vero Beach water customers.

City Manager Jim O’Connor confirmed at 9:30 p.m. Sunday, a report being circulated on social media by a city water employee about a boil water notice being issued for all city water customers, whether or not they were affected by the power outage Sunday night.

O’Connor said the boil-water notice is due to the fact that there was a “loss of water pressure at the water plant during the power outage.”

Until all water sample tests come back clear and safe for drinking, or for at least 72 hours from 8 p.m. Sunday, residents on the Vero Beach water system should boil water at a rolling boil for at least one minute. Also, for safety, remember to let the water cool before drinking or getting water in contact with skin.
