Driver arrested after hit-run injures cyclist

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Authorities arrested a Sebastian man accused of hitting a bicyclist with his SUV, then fleeing the scene, around 2 a.m. on Saturday in the 4000 block of 58th Avenue.

The victim was left with a large laceration on the back of his head that EMS said needed stitches, according to the arrest report.

Leonardo Almanza, 21, of 134 Englar Drive, Sebastian, faces a single charge of leaving the scene of an accident with injury.

Authorities stopped Almanza’s SUV approximately five miles from the scene of the incident. The vehicle had a broken headlight, broken side mirror and damage to the fender, all on the passenger side.

When questioned, Almanza said he was “kissing on” the passenger of the vehicle when he hit something. He claimed he thought he hit a sign.

Almanza posted $10,000 bond and was released from the Indian River County Jail Saturday afternoon.
