James Walter Singer III, 80, Vero Beach

James “Jim” Walter Singer III, 80, of Vero Beach, passed away on Jan. 24, 2016, at home with his family.

He is survived by his wife Mary; daughters Lauren and Brooke; five grandchildren; brother Tom; and seven nieces and nephews.

He was pre-deceased by his daughter Lindsay McAnally and his sister Barky Baldwin.

Born and raised in St. Louis, Mo., Singer graduated from St. Louis Country Day School, Harvard University, and the University of Virginia Law School. He also attended the London School of Economics.

He began his career at the St. Louis law firm of Husch, Eppenberger, Donahue, Elson and Jones. He worked in the General Council’s office of the Office of Economic Opportunity. He then became a journalist, first for the St. Louis Post Dispatch and later for the Chicago Sun Times where he covered legal affairs, including the Chicago Seven trial, and authored a book on the Angela Davis trial. He then moved to Washington, D.C., where he covered business and labor for the National Journal. He also wrote position papers and Congressional testimony for the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Research Association.

Among his special interests were tennis, golf, gardening and above all, the St. Louis Cardinals. He was known and loved for his unerring sense of humor that gently poked fun at the human condition. Our world is diminished by his absence.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, at Community Church in Vero Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the charity of your choice.
