Teen leads high speed chase in stolen car

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A Vero Beach High School student was arrested early Tuesday morning after leading authorities on a high speed chase through the County in a stolen car.

Torrein Archer, 15, of Vero Beach faces charges including grand theft of a motor vehicle and eluding law enforcement officers, according to the arrest affidavit.

Authorities spotted the stolen vehicle traveling 85 mph west on County Road 512 in Fellsmere. As officials pursued the vehicle, it reached up to 115 mph in a 45 mph zone, the arrest report shows.

The vehicle was reported stolen out of Fellsmere. According to authorities, Archer took the car from his brother’s roommate without permission.

The teen headed east toward Sebastian and eventually south through the county, reaching speeds exceeding 130 mph as officers called in Archer’s location and direction of travel.

Authorities set up a perimeter around the Vero Green apartment complex near the Indian River Mall after receiving a tip Archer may be headed there. The stolen car was located outside the apartment building and Archer was found hiding in the bathroom of a friend’s apartment.

Archer was detained but not booked into the Indian River County Jail due to his status as a minor.
