Rita M. Callahan, 91, of Indian River Estates passed away on Jan. 13, 2016. She succumbed to a heart and lung failure at Indian River VNA Hospice House.
She is survived by her loving husband Lawrence; nephew Norman Kolb (Shirley) of Fredericksburg, Va.; numerous friends around the country who she kept in contact with via telephone – Jesse Glass, Jean Lapple, Pat Mahoney, Claudia Costello, Louise McGee and many others too numerous to mention.
Callahan went home to the Lord, eager to see her patron saint, St. Rita, and her mother and father, Mildred and John Kress.
Callahan was born in Rochester, N.Y., and following grade school and high school joined the US Marines during WWII. She had a lifelong interest in all things US Marines and would often let folks know that she was a Marine just after she introduced herself.
She was married for 70 years to Lawrence H. Callahan also living at Indian River Estates. The Callahan’s have been living in various Florida communities for the past 30 years, the most recent being the Harmony Island community of Grand Harbor in Vero Beach where they were founding members.
