Suspected WWII munitions force evacuations near St. Ed’s

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Possible WWII munitions have been found in the area across from St. Edward’s School and have forced authorities to close a roadway and evacuate residents.

The munitions will be detonated in place and a few residents have been evacuated out of an abundance of caution, according to Indian River County Sheriff’s Spokesman Sgt. Eric Flowers.

The scene is off the 100 block of Highway A1A near the Ocean Ridge neighborhood, according to Vero Beach Police Spokesman Off. Anna Carden.

Indian River County Fire Rescue secured the scene, according to Sgt. Flowers. Representatives from Patrick Air Force Base are on scene to evaluate what was found.

Authorities do not know if the munitions are live or not.
