SEBASTIAN — While door-to-door solicitors may be unwelcome and annoying to many citizens the Police Department and Code Enforcement cannot restrict this Constitutional activity under US Supreme Court decisions. Currently there are solicitors coming to residences and businesses offering to paint address numbers on the driveway and curb area of property.
The Sebastian Police Department neither condones nor discourages this activity, however there are a few things you should consider:
1) City Ordinance 26-7 requires that numbers 4 inches or greater in height be affixed to the structure and clearly visible from the street.
2) The advertisement received by the Police Department from several residents to paint curb numbers at their homes does NOT comply with the current City Ordinance.
3) This marking is not required under any law or code.
“Your safety and protection is our primary concern,” said Police Chief Michelle Morris. “Do not open your door to anyone who you are not familiar with or comfortable accessing your home.”
