Charles Hugh McGettigan, 85, of Vero Beach, passed away on Dec. 29, 2015, at the Brennity.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Evelyn and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnephews and nieces.
Born Aug. 17, 1930 to Mr. and Mrs. Hugh McGettigan in Philadelphia, Penn., McGettigan was educated in parochial schools, graduating from West Catholic Class of 1948. At the age of 17, he entered the Christian Brothers and taught with them until he was 41.
He was educated at LaSalle University, Villanova University and Catholic University, obtaining a M.A. from each school attended and taught in the US and Canada. As a lay person, he taught in the Camden, N.J. Diocese at Holy Spirit High for 24 years, primarily as a theology teacher.
In addition to teaching he coached speech/debate, baseball, tennis, and moderated at the National Honor Society. He was an avid reader.
Upon retirement, he and Evelyn retired to Florida where they enjoyed dining, theater, museums and music. During their marriage of more than 40 years, they had six residences which Evelyn decorated with the skills of an interior decorator.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., Monday, Jan. 4, 2016 at Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home in Vero Beach. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 p.m., Monday, Jan. 4, 2016, at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach and entombment will follow at Forest Hill Memorial Gardens in Palm City.
