Chaille Handy Tullis, Vero Beach

Chaille Handy Tullis, of Vero Beach, passed away on Dec. 23, at her home.

She is survived by her daughter Mrs. Charles George Leopold de Barcza (Sallie) of Bedminster, N.J. and twin sons Barclay of Palo Alto, Calif., and Garner of PietraRubbia, Italy; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Richard Barclay Tullis, Chairman Emeritus of Harris Corp in Melbourne, Fla., and all seven of her siblings.

Tullis was the first child of Jamison Handy and Ethel Tremaine Gray.

She grew up in Evanston, Ill., before going to Principia Upper School in St. Louis, Mo., graduating in 1931. She earned her BA Magna cum laude in 1935 at Principia College, Elsah, Ill., her MA in 1964 at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. There was additional study at Chicago Art Institute, Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh, Penn., and the summer Institute of Euthenics at Vassar College.

She was the sole proprietor of Chaille Interiors for more than 35 years. During her lifetime, she has served on the Boards of Trustees as Vice President of Child Health Association, Sewickley, PA Trustee Emeritus of the Cleveland Institute of Art, Corresponding Secretary of the Women’s Committee of the Cleveland Museum of Art, President of the Women’s Committee of the Cleveland Orchestra, Vero Beach Museum of Art, President of the Country Garden Club, Cleveland, OH, and many others.

Tullis was a former member of the John’s Island Club and the Moorings Club of Vero Beach; The Hillsboro Club of Pompano Beach; Kirtland Club, Country Club, The Cleveland Racquet Club, The Intown Club, Blossom Hanger, All of Cleveland, Ohio; The Edgeworth Sewickley and the Western Pennsylvania Tennis League of Pennsylvania.

She was a current member of the Oak Harbor Club, Bent Pine Golf Club, Daughters of the Cincinnati, United Daughters of the Confederacy, The Twenty First Century Club, of Cleveland, Ohio and the Vero Beach Museum of Art.

Tullis enjoyed travel, tennis, golf, needlepoint and NY Times crossword puzzles.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, 1:30 p.m. at the First Church of Christ, Scientist, 1602 23rd Street, Vero Beach, FL.
