Skimmer devices found at bank ATMs in Indian River County

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Bank of America ATM customers need to review their banking records after four card skimmers were discovered at various branches throughout Indian River County.

The skimmers were found in Sebastian, Roseland, Vero Beach, and Indian River Shores.

“We encourage anyone who has used any of these ATMs in recent days to carefully check your bank statements and consult your bank about requesting a new card,” said Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar. “As soon as we can get video of the suspects from the banks, we will release the photos in an attempt to capture these thieves and bring them to justice.”

On Friday, an alert customer notified the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office of a skimmer device found on a Bank of America automatic teller machine (ATM) located at the 6300 A1A branch in the Town of Indian River Shores, according to a press release.

Deputies immediately began checking other Bank of America ATMs throughout the county and found three additional devices. The other three devices were found at branches located at 13555 US Highway 1 in Roseland, 710 South Flemming Street in Sebastian, and 5780 20th Street in Vero Beach.

The skimmer devices were removed from the ATMs and will be processed by the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit, according to authorities.

Detectives will attempt to recover fingerprints or DNA of the suspects as well as video from the banks of the installation of these devices. A cursory analysis of the devices revealed that an electronic skimmer piece was installed on top of the card insertion slot capturing the card information as the user inserted their card.

A pin hole camera was added above the touch screen to capture the user inputting their personal identification number (PIN).
