Accused drunk driver crashes gate at South Beach Park

VERO BEACH — A man accused of driving drunk crashed his pickup truck into the gate at South Beach Park and plowed through the landscaping before coming to a stop just before 1 a.m. Wednesday.

The man, identified as David Bain Jr., 33, of 1455 90th Ave., Vero Beach, is under arrest facing charges of driving under the influence with property damage.

Bain repeatedly refused to take a field sobriety test as well as to have his breath tested, according to the Vero Beach Police Department.

However, Bain’s unsteadiness on his feet, his slow and slurred speech, and the odor of alcohol surrounding him led authorities to believe he was drunk at the time of the crash, the arrest report states.

A female passenger in the truck was also found to be impaired, according to police. Due to her condition, police said, she was unable to tell them anything other than Bain was driving and made a wrong turn.

Neither Bain nor the female passenger was listed as having sustained injuries due to the crash. The cost of the damage to the park’s entrance was not listed in the report.
