Glendale Asst. Principal dies in traffic accident

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — An assistant principal at Glendale Elementary was killed after being hit by a car driven by her boyfriend late Wednesday night in Roseland.

Janai Cooper, 39, was killed in the 12500 block of Roseland Road, according to Indian River County Sheriff’s Spokesman Sgt. Eric Flowers.

The boyfriend, Brian Coffee, was on his way to get cigarettes when he backed over  Cooper with his pickup truck.

The crash is still being investigated, according to authorities. No one is in custody and no charges have been filled.

Cooper was a beloved figure at Glendale Elementary and throughout the school

district, the School District said in a prepared statement.

“This is an incredible loss for the Glendale family and our entire school community,” said Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Rendell. “Janai was a talented young educator who was committed to help each and every child she came in contact with. Her positive impact on the lives of those around her was unmatched. Her energy and enthusiasm for learning was contagious. We were better because of her.”
