Man wants to visit friends, tries breaking into jail

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A man using the drug Flakka tried to break into the Indian River County Jail Monday night in an attempt to visit friends.

Patrick Rempe, 24, of Vero Beach, rammed his 2002 Toyota into the front doors of building C barely missing a deputy who was outside, according to the press release. The impact shattered the glass on the doors of the building.

Rempe admitted to deputies that he was “high on Flakka,” according to the Sheriff’s Office, and that he just wanted to visit friends who were in the jail.

He then rammed into the fence outside of building E causing damage to the fence, according to authorities. After being removed from the car, Rempe spat on the deputies.

He was transported to the Indian River Medical Center after sustaining injuries from the crash and being entangled in the razor wire.

“This is what drugs do to you,” said Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar. “Flakka is poisoning our youth. Fortunately, none of our deputies were injured and our facility wasn’t compromised.”

Rempe is currently being held under supervision at the Indian River Medical Center, according to authorities. He faces charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer, three counts of felony criminal mischief, leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, driving under the influence, and possibly more.
