Willow School students raise funds to go to Washington D.C.

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Willow School students will set out on an historical exploration as part of their United States History, Civics and Political studies. Students in grades six through eight will travel to Washington D.C. this spring.

Engage, prepare, empower, this sums up the Willow School’s approach to learning. The use of the experiential learning model utilizes hands-on and immersion experiences to provide optimal learning opportunities. Field trips bring to life the topics introduced in the classroom, helping to cement concepts and reinforce learning.

“This is a chance to bring history alive and we have found that students remember more because of the personal experience,” said Govinda Reinhalter, executive director of the Willow School.

The school’s approach to learning creates an environment rich in opportunities for students to succeed.

As 25 students and their chaperones fly to the nation’s capital on Sunday, April 24 they will find themselves immersed in the center of some of the country’s most historic locales. During their stay students will walk the National Mall, visit the Lincoln, Jefferson and Roosevelt Memorials, tour the Smithsonian Museums, National Archives, Ford’s Theatre, National Zoo, Mount Vernon and hopefully the White House.

Willow School parents and students will be actively fundraising to make this trip a reality. Students have already completed a cookie dough sale, raising about $1000 toward the trip. They are currently selling Treasure Coast Enjoyment coupon books. The books are $35 and have two for one offers on dining, fast food, recreation, golf and more. On Dec. 12, students and parents will host an “All You Can Eat Waffle Breakfast” from 9 to 11 a.m. at the school.

Fundraising will continue in 2016 with a Read-A-Thon, yard sale and GoFundMe campaign. All donations to the Washington D.C. Travel Fund are tax deductible. Checks can be mailed to The Willow School at 930 43rd Avenue Vero Beach, FL 32960. For more information visit them on Facebook or www.thewillowschool.org.
