Officers get award for saving drowning victim

INDIAN RIVER SHORES — Six Indian River Shores Public Safety Officers who helped pull a drowning victim for the waters off A-1-A in October were awarded for their life saving efforts.

The officers received awards for valor from Town Manager Robbie Stabe Saturday during the Town’s annual Holiday Party.

On Oct. 21 authorities responded and rescued a swimmer from a near downing incident near the Seagrape Trail beach access.

Indian River Shores and Indian River County Fire Rescue pulled the person from the water who was caught in a rip current about 100 yards off shore, according to dispatch.

Five members of the Indian River Shores Public Safety team went in after the swimmer, according to Chief Rich Rosell. The incident happened around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, in the 8300 block of Highway A1A, according to authorities.

The victim and three of the Indian River Shores officers were transported to the hospital.
