Evalyn Norma Herrler Harbin, of Vero Beach, passed away on Nov. 21, 2015.
Harbin was born in Aurora on Nov. 21, 1916, to Norma Christine Cayton Herrler and Robert Henry “Curly” Herrler.
She married the love of her life, William Edward Harbin, on Dec. 26, 1936. Evalyn was a graduate of Aurora High School and worked in retail all her life as did her husband.
In the early years of their marriage they traveled extensively all over the country. They purchased the Gambles Hardware franchise in Versailles in the early 1950’s and later built a new building on SR 421 next door to the original store, operating in this location for several years.
In 1965 they moved to Vero Beach where they continued to work in retail. Harbin retired from Wodtke’s Department Store after more than 40 years of service.
She and Bill were never blessed with biological children but they were “bonus” parents to her sister Marcella (Eugene) Ross’s nine children: Sharon (John) Allen of Jasonville, Ind., Mary Ross of Franklin, Ind., Nancy (Bob) Bennett of Martinsville, Ind., Mike Ross of Vero Beach, Sally (Steve) Poehner of Cincinnati, Ohio, Carol Ross of Seattle, Wash., Betsy Ross of Aurora, Kathleen Firestone of Versailles, Ind., and Brian Ross (deceased), as well as one very special niece/daughter, Patsy (Bill) Nash of Shreveport, La. She is also survived by the aforementioned family and 17 great-nieces and nephews, 23 great-great-nieces and nephews and four great-great-great-nieces and nephew.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, sister, husband, one nephew, one great- niece and one great-great-nephew.
Known as “Aunt Edgie,” Harbin was a loving presence in all of our lives and will be remembered for her selfless devotion to us all. Family was first and
foremost in her life and we are so very thankful for the years of her love.
