INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — An inmate of the Indian River County Jail, already charged with battering on an officer, now faces another charge after she tried to choke a corrections deputy on her way to the showers.
According to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, 23-year-old Katheryn Chinn was being moved from her cell to the showers in handcuffs when she used those handcuffs to choke Deputy Jeff Wolski from behind.
Deputy Wolski was treated at the Indian River Medical Center, receiving two stitches.
“This incident goes to show the dangers that our corrections deputies face each and every day,” Sheriff Deryl Loar said in a statement released by the Sheriff’s Office. “While most of our citizens were home sleeping, one of our corrections deputies was injured by an inmate. With so many tragic events capturing the attention of the national media, we are proud of our men and women who work hard every day to keep the public safe and protect us.”
Chinn has been in jail since Nov. 30 when she was booked on a charge of battering an officer from the Vero Beach Police Department.
For the initial felony charge of battery on a law enforcement officer, Chinn was being held in the jail in lieu of $5,000 bond.
Her bond amount increased to $150,000 today, when she appeared before Judge David Morgan on the newest charge.
