Accused pharmacy burglar caught after crash

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A Tennessee man is in custody following a burglary of an Indian River County pharmacy that ended in a pursuit and crash over the weekend.

Jason Cripps, 37, of Smithville, Tenn., faces felony charges including burglary and possession of burglary tools, along with misdemeanor charges for criminal mischief and resisting arrest without violence.

Authorities say Cripps and possibly another person burglarized the CVS Pharmacy at 53rd Street and US 1 in the early morning hours of Saturday, Nov. 28.

Deputies responded to an alarm sounding at CVS and found glass on the front door had shattered and there were pry marks between the two front doors, according to the arrest report.

CVS notified dispatch that a white van with a ladder rack and two subjects were observed at the scene.

A van matching the description was seen headed north on US 1 and eventually crashed into the woods off South Tropicana Drive as authorities followed it, according to the arrest affidavit.

Officers observed the suspect, now identified as Cripps, attempt to flee the scene before complying with officers’ commands. A search of Cripps yielded a window punch, according to the arrest report.

Cripps is being held in lieu of $61,000 bond.

No mention of the second subject was made in the arrest report.
