Woman arrested for throwing ‘deadly missile’ at police

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – An Indian River County woman is facing a felony charge for throwing a deadly missile after launching a wooden stake and metal spring at an unmarked Sebastian Detective’s vehicle.

Angela Story, 34, of 5975 37th Street, Vero Beach, also faces misdemeanor charges including criminal mischief with damage greater than $200 but less than $1,000, and disorderly conduct.

The officer was driving north on US 1 approaching 37th Street when he saw Story standing in the median holding “what appeared to be a bat shaped object above her head,” according to the arrest report.

The detective moved to an outside lane to give her some space, but she stepped into the street and “threw the object into his unmarked patrol car striking it in the left bumper causing it to fly up over the windshield,” the arrest report states.

Story attempted to flee after the incident but the officer detained her on the ground in a field.

Responding officers located a wooden stake broken into several pieces, estimated to be between 3- and 4-feet long and 2- to 3-inches in diameter. They also found a metal spring wrapped in metal, between 2- and 3-feet long. The items were found in the vicinity where the incident occurred.

Authorities determined “both of these objects could have caused death or great bodily harm if they had struck the detective,” according the report.

Estimated damage to the patrol car is greater than $200 but less than $1,000.

Story is being held in the Indian River County Jail in lieu of $6,000 bond.
