Veterans Council holds Vero Beach, Sebastian ceremonies Nov. 11

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Veterans Council of Indian River County invites the community to attend the Veterans Day Ceremony Wednesday Nov. 11, 2015 at 8:45 a.m. on Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary, Vero Beach. This event is free to the public.

The keynote address will be given by Lieutenant General James H. Johnson, US Army, retired.

Lt. Gen. Johnson has dedicated a lifetime to preparing soldiers, leading them into battle at the highest levels of command and inspiring emerging leaders to serve their Nation in war and in peace.

The ceremony will also include special guest Master Chief Petty Officer Charles “Skip” Bowen, Retired. The 10th Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard, Master Chief Bowen served 32 years in the Coast Guard, serving four years directly under Admiral Allen, the Commandant of the Coast Guard.

The ceremony will be given military honors and include a Parade of Colors by Color Guards from Indian River County. Master’s Academy Fife and Drum Corp and the Vero Beach High School Band will perform. The customary wreath will be laid at the memorial of one of the honored and will be accompanied by Bagpiper Michael Hyde and the ship’s bell.

The day will conclude with a rifle salute and Taps by bugler Duke Scales.

Additionally, for those in the northern part of the county, the Veterans of Foreign Wars 10210 and the American Legion Post 189 will present their ceremony at 11 a.m., Nov.11 at the Veterans Memorial by Riverview Park on US 1 in Sebastian. The public is welcome to attend both and the Veterans Council encourages attendance to either ceremony.
