St. Ed’s varsity girls soccer team opened its season last week by overwhelming Fort Pierce Westwood on the road and Master’s Academy at home by identical 8-0 scores.
The start was similar to last year when Head Coach Jaclyn Pancotti replaced Hall of Famer and current Athletic Director Jeff Lamscha. By all accounts the transition was smooth and successful. The challenge for Pancotti this year is to adjust the formula to bring about a different ending.
Her first team reeled off 15 straight games without a defeat to start the season before it all ended with back-to-back losses in the district final and regional quarterfinal. The overall record of 12-3-2 was nevertheless a remarkable way to kick off a head coaching career.
“St. Edward’s varsity girls soccer team has been waiting for the season to officially start since falling short in the district finals last year,” Pancotti said. “As a team we have set our goals high and we know there will be obstacles along the way. We had to say goodbye to nine seniors, five of them starters.
“I have been planning all summer on how to effectively fill those positions. As our season finally gets underway our team is extremely motivated and dedicated. There are a number of girls who are being asked to play different positions, or even have entirely new assignments on the field. I am most proud of their attitudes – there are no complaints or objections.
“Our girls know sacrifices must be made and we have to work hard as a team to get back to the district finals. Our captains, Alyssa Motta and Mia Festagallo, are exceptional players, but their leadership both on and off the field is going to keep the entire team focused on our goals.”
Firepower on offense has clearly returned in full force and two shutouts speak volumes about a revamped defense. Kyrstin Malek returns as keeper after dishing out 10 goose eggs last season.
