UPDATE: Parachute found in skydiver death

SEBASTIAN — The parachute that was missing in the death of a skydiver Oct. 17 has been found.

A fisherman found it close to where skydiver Wilfrid Hector, 71, of Sebastian, died after a failed decent, according to Sebastian Police Cmdr. John Blackledge. The parachute was found near the bank off of Robin Lane.

It will be examined by experts to determine if foul play was involved. There is not definite time frame to the results, Cmdr. Blackledge said.

Hector was identified as a retired United States Marine with skydiving experience.

Hector was pronounced dead on the scene Oct. 17 after authorities responded around 11 a.m., according to a press release.

A caller notified authorities that they saw the skydiver falling to the earth without a parachute. Indian River County Fire Rescue, Sebastian Police, and the Sheriff’s Office conducted a search for the skydiver near the wooded area around Roseland Road and Airport Dr. South, across from Dale Wimbrow Park.

The skydiver was located in the woods near About Kayaks, according to authorities.

Services for Hector will be held Nov. 14 at 11:30 a.m., at Skydive Sebastian. For more information visit: https://www.facebook.com/events/1641572009447260/
