John Nicholas Basile, 89, of Vero Beach, passed away on Oct. 26, 2015.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria of 60 years; three children, Bradley Keith (Dori) Basile of Plainfield, Conn., Laura Cheryl Gerard of Seagrove, Fla., Robert John (Garnet) Basile of La Crescenta, Calif.; grandson Ian Sebastian Basile; niece Debbie Digangi of Chicaho Ill.; nephew William Basile of Myrtle Beach, S.C.
He was predeceased by parents Dominic and Gilda Basile; brother Thomas G. Basile; sister Gloria Jean Everett.
Basile was born in Cliffside, N.J. on Nov. 9, 1925, the son of Gilda Ursoiuli Basile and Dominic Basile. He lived in Vero Beach for 27 years, after coming from North Stonington, Conn. He was a 1951 graduate of University of Connecticut in Storrs, Conn., where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
He was a WWII veteran, serving in the United States Navy and served on the USS Gearing and USS Saturn. He was discharged from the service in 1946. His early career as an Industrial Engineer was spent with various companies including Remington Rand, Westinghouse Electric, Avco Lycoming and RCA.
In 1955, he married Gloria Gehmlich in Salem Lutheran Church, Bridgeport, Conn. In 1963, he joined General Dynamics Corporation and retired 25 years later as a manager of Human Resources at the Data Systems Division in Norwich, Conn. He was active in both charitable and community activities and clubs including Lions, Rotary, Elks and formed SCORE at Avery Point, Conn., after retiring. He was a member of the Shennnecossett Yacht Club and spent winter in Florida and summer in North Stonington and Groton, Conn. He was very proud to be able to be on the Southeast Honor Flight in 2013 to Washington, DC.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, Nov. 6, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St. Westerly, RI 02891. A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. in the funeral home chapel; burial will follow in River Bend Cemetery.
