Howard Edwin Guthrie, 91, Sebastian

Howard Edwin Guthrie, 91, of Sebastian, passed away on Oct. 20, 2015 in Hospice in Vero Beach, surrounded by family.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years Margaret Guthrie; children Glenn Guthrie of Sebastian, Nancy Wood (Steve) of Sebastian and Doug Guthrie (Nancy) of Hobe Sound; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren with one on the way.

He was predeceased by his parents Ed and Ruth Guthrie, his sister Ruthie and brother Herbert “Buddy.”

Guthrie was born April 17, 1924 in Vero to Howard Edwin Guthrie, Sr. and Ruth Mary Beesley.

He grew up in West Palm Beach and attended school there, graduating from Palm Beach High School in 1942 and attending Palm Beach Junior College before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. He trained in many locations before being sent to Radar School in Boca Raton and then assigned to the 58th Bomb Squadron and served overseas.

Guthrie graduated from FSU in 1949 where he was a Phi Kappa Tau. He later became a Certified Public Accountant. He married Margaret Jones in 1949 and they located to West Palm Beach. In 1960 they moved to Boca Raton where he started the accounting firm Guthrie, Jacobs and Eubank.

He was instrumental in the completion of Spanish River Park while serving as City Councilman. They later moved to Sebastian and he retired in 1984.

He had many interests: hunting, fishing, camping, woodworking, farming, traveling, watching FSU football games, reading and crossword puzzles.

A celebration of life memorial will be held at 11 a.m., Oct. 31, at Seawinds Funeral Home, 735 S. Fleming Street, Sebastian, Fl. (772) 589-1933. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his name to VNA Hospice of Vero Beach or of one’s choice.
