Thieves target unlocked vehicles in Fellsmere

FELLSMERE — The Fellsmere Police Department is again warning residents against leaving vehicles unlocked after a string of burglaries were reported on Saturday.

It is unknown how many people may have been involved in the burglaries. Multiple vehicles on N. Bay and N. Elm streets were burglarized, FPD reported via its Facebook page.

The burglaries occurred overnight between Friday and Saturday.

Police Chief Keith Touchberry told VeroNews.com Monday morning that the vehicles were parked in a driveway, a yard or on the street.

In one case, a carport on N. Elm was also burglarized, making it a case of burglary of a residence, he said. A hand-held auger had been taken but has since been recovered.

“This is an active investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact us,” Chief Touchberry said.

The police department encourages residents to lock their vehicles and report any suspicious activity. Law enforcement also recommends residents not to leave valuables in plain sight within their vehicles by stashing them out of sight or bringing them inside with them when they leave the vehicle.

Anyone with information regarding the burglaries is asked to call the Fellsmere Police Department at (772) 571-1360.
