INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Indian River Genealogical Society is pleased to announce the program topic for the regular monthly meeting on Oct. 13, 2015. The meeting is to be held in the first floor meeting room at the Indian River County Main Library, 1600 21st Street, Vero Beach.
The business meeting convenes at 9:30 a.m., followed by light refreshments. The featured lecture begins at 10:30 a.m. This meeting is free and open to the public.
Pamela J. Cooper, genealogist, lecturer and librarian, has been the supervisor of the Archive Center and Genealogy Department in Vero Beach since 1986. She built the genealogy department collection from 250 titles to more than 30,000 titles of materials from around the world.
The Archive Center is a rich resource for Florida and Indian River County history. Mrs. Cooper has served in many capacities on local, state and national genealogical societies and organizations, plus she has received various awards for her work.
The subject of Mrs. Cooper’s lecture is “Remember the Ladies!” It is incredible and inexcusable that women have been overlooked or literally deprived of telling their stories over the centuries. Half of our ancestors were women and tracing females can be difficult and challenging.
Research requires creativity and patience when searching for records of the female line. The laws and customs of the time period determine the location and existence of the records. It is time to reveal the “feme covert”—the “covered woman.”
