UPDATE: Man takes skull to parking lot, reports skeleton in woods

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A homeless man is credited with finding a skeletal body in the woods near Roseland Road and US 1 after he took the skull across the street into a shopping center’s parking lot.

According to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, the man approached a maintenance worker at the Riverwalk Plaza, asking the worker to contact authorities.

The Sheriff’s Office responded to the area and found the “skeletonized” human remains about 200 feet east of US 1 in a wooded area known for being frequented by the homeless.

Investigators interviewed the homeless in the area, who were cooperative, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The homeless were able to provide some information on a possible identity of the deceased person. However, no name has yet been confirmed.

Members of Indian River County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Services, Criminal Investigations, and Uniform Patrol units remain on scene and are working with the Medical Examiner investigator. The remains will be taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office where cause of death and identity will attempt to be determined.
