John’s Island fairway home offers serene water views

Quaint, cozy and comfortable is the lovely fairway home with water views located on a sprawling property in a quiet cul de sac at 190 Oleander Way in John’s Island.

Casting a Bermuda vibe, the 4,173 gross square foot home has a charming cottage-like feel to it. Beadboard ceilings, hardwood floors and custom millwork add to the aura of this house on a .43-acre lot listed by John’s Island Real Estate Company for $2,250,000.

It’s not just the strong construction and classic Georgian architecture by the celebrated late local architect James Gibson that make this 1971 home delightful the moment one steps foot into it. It’s also the location that hits home to a buyer who thrives on beautiful outside surroundings to enjoy from an indoor or outdoor vantage point.

Situated on a quiet street with no through traffic, the house enjoys a very private location overlooking the 6th fairway of John’s Island South Course. A lake provides water views for homeowners and a virtual sanctuary for a wide variety of bird species including blue herons, egrets and wood storks.

“If you’re feeling lucky, you can bring your rod out there and cast out a line,” said John’s Island Real Estate agent Ba Stone. The catch: tarpon.

“The house has a Bermuda feel to it,” she said. “And with the southeasterly view in John’s Island, it gets great light all day long, and a prevailing breeze comes off the lake.”

Owners Claude and Joanne Limoges found the location awe-inspiring. “We were drawn to this particular property because the moment you open the front door you are overwhelmed with the gorgeous water view,” said Limoges. “On the other side of the lake is the 6th green and we have so enjoyed watching the golfers tee off while still enjoying our private back yard.”

The Limoges were also struck by the handsome hardwood floors and the beadboard ceilings. They knew with some updating they create the perfect combination of coastal cottage charm that they were looking for, which they did after purchasing the property in 2012.

They added the “Old Florida” stone driveway and a brick walkway to further enhance that coastal cottage feel. They cleared the overgrown shrubbery and exposed an even better view of the water.

The couple is moving because they recently purchased a boat and intend to relocate to a house nearby that has a private dock.

The lovely retreat at 190 Oleander Way includes a guest cabana with full bath, bedroom and a 15.4 by 15.2 foot living space with a Murphy bed. The cabana offers direct access to the patio and pool, and has that splendid fairway and water view that people in the main house enjoy.

The generous 23-foot by 16-foot foot main-house living room with fireplace opens onto a 34-foot by 11-foot sunlit lanai with multiple floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing the views. The spacious open island kitchen with ample storage adjoins a dining area with wet bar.

The master bedroom is approximately 16 feet by 16 feet and has wonderful views and access to the pool and patio.

A similar-size guestroom offers all of the comfort a visitor could ask for with plenty of room to move about in, a closet and private bath.

The house – conveniently located near the south gate for quick access to A1A – also features an office, powder room, lush side garden terrace and 2-car garage.

John’s Island Club is a private, member-owned club located in Indian River Shores, recently named the safest city in Florida. Nestled between three miles of sandy beaches along the Atlantic Ocean and the spectacular Indian River Lagoon, the Club offers classic to casual dining facilities, three 18-hole championship golf courses, 18 Har-Tru clay tennis courts, singles and doubles squash courts, a state-of-the-art fitness center, two croquet lawns and an outstanding calendar of social and recreational activities.

“Built in 1971, [the Limoges’ home] is one of the first houses built in John’s Island, and is one of the pick of the litter locations,” said Stone. “It’s a breath-taking golf course lake view with a coveted south easterly exposure. Even on a cloudy day there’s plenty of light.”

Looking out at a bird skimming the surface of the water, she added, “It’s peaceful and tranquil here.”
