Indian River State College features lineup of Frankenstein themed events

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Join Indian River State College (IRSC) for the kickoff of “One Book, One College,” complete with Frankenstein themed events and productions.

This kick-off event will feature prizes, games and a panel of faculty and students giving Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” a grand introduction. Other Frankenstein themed events will include activities at each branch campus, a Performing Arts production of the play Oct. 22-24 and a special screenings of the 1931 classic film “Frankenstein.”

The IRSC One Book, One College Kickoff with FrankenZone activities and panel discussion is Oct. 1 starting at 2 p.m. in N-135, with live stream and recording for virtual students. The panel will lead conversation about how Frankenstein is seen through the lens of each of their unique areas of study including literature, biology, human services and more. This will be a thought-provoking discussion about how Frankenstein is seen through many views.

Branch campus kickoff events will feature an exploration of bioethics relating to “Frankenstein” presented by scientific consultant, teacher and science fiction author Arthur Doweyko. Dates and locations for this event are: Oct. 6 at the IRSC Chastain Campus in Stuart at 12:30 p.m., Oct. 7 at the IRSC Dixon Hendry Campus in Okeechobee at 12:30 p.m., Oct. 13 at the IRSC Pruitt Campus in St. Lucie West at 12:30 p.m. and Oct. 14 at the IRSC Mueller Campus in Vero Beach at 12:30 p.m.

The Performing and Visual Arts department presents Victor Gialanella’s adaptation of “Frankenstein” Oct. 22-24. Steeped in nineteenth-century splendor, this classic tale of horror and suspense relives Dr. Frankenstein’s ill-fated attempts to discover the secrets of life and death. Tickets are $15. As a special Halloween treat, IRSC is showing the original 1931 “Frankenstein” movie at each IRSC campus. The film will be shown Oct. 28 on the IRSC Main Campus at 2 p.m., the IRSC Chastain Campus at 2 p.m. and the IRSC Dixon Hendry Campus at 6 p.m. The film will also be shown Oct. 29 on the IRSC Pruitt Campus at 2 p.m. and the IRSC Mueller Campus at 2 p.m.

The IRSC Library has selected Mary Shelley’s book, “Frankenstein; or the Modern Prometheus” for One Book, One College and is inviting IRSC faculty, staff, students, and community participants to read the book and participate in IRSC activities exploring the book’s many questions, themes, and images.
