2nd student accused of gun on campus

VERO BEACH — A second 15-year-old student at the Vero Beach High Freshman Learning Center has been arrested, accused of having a gun on  campus.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the student was found taking a gun and stashing it near the school property not far from the Boys and Girls Club on 17th Avenue. He was arrested Tuesday afternoon. This incident was connected with the arrest Monday of another student with a gun.

The investigation stemmed from an incident that happened Sept. 11, according to the Sheriff’s Office report. That incident involved the student displaying a firearm at the FLC bus loop.

Four students told investigators they saw the suspect remove the firearm and point it at a school bus. A fifth student admitted she observed him pull a “silver object” but could not say it was a gun.

The student denied displaying the gun but told investigators he had it in his possession, the arrest report states.

While investigating that case, authorities learned the student carried a firearm and stashed it in the ditch line north of the Boys and Girls Club at 1729 17th Ave., according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The student led detectives to the firearm, a Liberty .22 caliber revolver, according to the report.

This is the second case this week of authorities investigating students at the Freshman Learning Center for being in possession of firearms on school property.

Both students said they were carrying them for self defense, according to Indian River County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Sgt. Eric Flowers. The Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into both cases.

Due to the age of the students, VeroNews.com is not identifying the minors.
