Barbara H. Malcolm, of Vero Beach, and Nantucket, MA, died Sept. 8, 2015, in Washington, DC. She was 91 years old. She had recently moved to Washington to be near family.
Mrs. Malcolm lived in Montclair, NJ, for more than 50 years, where she raised her three children, Ellen, Andy and Doug, and was active in community affairs. Mrs. Malcolm served as President of the Junior League of Montclair and chaired the board of the United Way of Essex County. She was the first woman elected to the board of the Montclair Savings Bank.
In 2000, Mrs. Malcolm moved to Vero Beach, FL. A resident of Oak Harbor, she was active in the Vero Beach American Contract Bridge League and the Oak Harbor community.
A summer resident of Nantucket, MA for 70 years, Mrs. Malcolm was a member of the Nantucket Yacht Club and the Sankaty Head Golf Club.
Mrs. Malcolm loved being with people and was known for her friendliness and willingness to help others. She was an avid bridge player and spent many afternoons playing with friends or competing in tournaments. She enjoyed gardening, reading, the theater and swimming.
But Mrs. Malcolm’s greatest joy was her four grandchildren. She loved being with them, following their lives and helping whenever she could.
She is survived by her three children, Ellen Malcolm, of Washington, DC, Andy Malcolm, of Nantucket, MA, and Doug Malcolm of Portland, ME; and four grandchildren, Ben Strauss-Malcolm, of San Diego, CA, Sam Strauss-Malcolm, of New York, NY, Abby Strauss-Malcolm of Prescott, AZ, and Gwen Malcolm of Nantucket, MA. She was predeceased by husbands William F. Reighley and Peter C. Malcolm.
