Police nab 2 men breaking into cars at auto lot

VERO BEACH — Two men are in custody after attempting to break into multiple vehicles at Tropical Auto Sales in Vero Beach in the early morning hours of Sunday, Sept. 6, according to authorities.

Efrain Montanez, 42, of Dade City, Fla., now faces charges including felony burglary, two counts of felony attempted burglary, and loitering or prowling.

Dennis Kempf, 35, of the 1500 block of 24th Avenue in Vero Beach faces charges including felony burglary, felony attempted burglary, felony petit theft and loitering or prowling.

A person reported the burglary in progress after observing Montanez and Kempf on the auto lot via surveillance cameras. Police arrived and found both men attempting to conceal themselves near vehicles on the business property, according to the arrest affidavits.

Surveillance footage shows the men entered or attempted to enter four separate vehicles.

Montanez is being held in lieu of $30,500 bond and Kemp is being held without bond.
