INDIAN RIVER SHORES — One cat from the house fire Sunday in Indian River Shores was rescued.
At 9:40 a.m. Sunday, a passerby noticed black smoke coming from a home at 917 Holoma Drive, according to Town Manager Robert Stabe. The caller told authorities the home was struck by lightning.
The home was not equipped with a fire alarm, and the homeowners were out of town at the time of the fire, according to authorities.
Indian River Shores Public Safety Department said smoke and flames were visible in the roof vent. Personnel Beniot and Beaumont found the home to be unoccupied with the exception of a cat named Cashmere, which was found unconscious on the second floor.
After conducting their assessment, they determined it unsafe to remain inside. First Aid was rendered to the cat, and it regained consciousness. It was eventually turned over to Indian River County Animal Control Supervisor Jeff West.
West continued to administer oxygen to the cat until he turned it over to a veterinary hospital.
