Burglary suspect’s family attack police during arrest

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A family of three were arrested just after midnight on Saturday when a burglary suspect’s wife and her daughter began beating police officers who were attempting to detain the uncooperative suspect.

Authorities arrived at Martin Vega’s home in the 3800 block of 18th Avenue after a neighbor reported Vega for attempted burglary.

The neighbor claimed he saw Vega attempting to break into his house through a bedroom window. Vega reportedly hid and then fled on foot when the victim arrived home and confronted him. According to the neighbor, this was not the first time Vega tried to gain entry into his home.

Vega reportedly did not cooperate with police when confronted about the burglary. He refused to comply with commands, and actively resisted arrest by pulling away from police, making “erratic movements” and hitting officers, according to a police report.

As police struggled to gain control of Vega, his wife, Yahaira Zeledon, and her daughter, Heydi Vega began hitting and punching the two arresting officers, the arrest affidavit shows.

The women ripped one deputy’s uniform, damaged his glasses, and repeatedly hit both officers in the head and body. One officer suffered a cut to his face.

Both Zeledon, 40, and Heydi Vega, 23, face two felony charges of battery on a law enforcement officer. Martin Vega, 40, faces two felony charges of resisting arrest with violence. They were booked into the Indian River County Jail on $25,000 bond each. All three were released on bond Saturday evening.

The victim of the alleged attempted burglary chose not to pursue charges.
