INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Indian River Genealogical Society is pleased to announce the program topic for the regular monthly meeting on Sept. 8. The meeting is to be held in the first floor meeting room at the Indian River County Main Library, 1600 21st Street, Vero Beach. The business meeting convenes at 9:30 a.m., followed by light refreshments. The featured lecture begins at 10:30 a.m. This meeting is free and open to the public.

Amy Larner Giroux, PhD, CG, CGL, is an award-winning author with articles published in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society Record, and The Genealogist (American Society of Genealogists).

Her interest include New York City, the Lower Hudson Valley, burial iconography, and ethnic studies. Giroux is the editor of The Florida Genealogist, the journal of the Florida State Genealogical Society. She is also co-chairperson for the 2016 National Genealogical Society Annual Conference, to be held in Fort Lauderdale.

The subject of Giroux’s lecture is “Listen to the Land! Understanding Your Ancestors Property Records.”

There may not be a lot of names, birth dates, or vital record information in property deeds. However, people can determine relationships and other helpful items from property records.

The talk includes discussion on the history of U.S. land from the British Crown to the present day, plus various types of deeds and how to use deed indexes to find ancestors. Land research holds a treasure trove of information that is often overlooked and many will be amazed at the discoveries that await.
