Fellsmere Police warn of impersonator ‘testing water’

FELLSMERE — The Fellsmere Police Department is warning the city’s residents that there is a person going around town impersonating a city worker to gain access to their homes to “test the water.”

Police warned the community via Facebook over the weekend that on Saturday a resident on S. Cypress Street reported a person came to the home and wanted to enter in order to test the customer’s water. The person who notified police asked the person for official identification, which the person was not able to provide, according to police.

The caller described the impersonator as a white male who was wearing khaki pants and a white striped shirt. He was driving a yellow Volkswagen Beetle.

According to Fellsmere Police, the City of Fellsmere’s water department does not test water this way. And, given the impersonator, the water department has no plans to contact residents in this manner for any reason without first making notification to the community through the city water bill and the media.

As a result of the police department’s Facebook post, other residents have come forward, reporting that they might have encountered the same person under other circumstances. They have also told authorities that the man might be traveling with another person.

“This is an active investigation and officers are trying to determine the actual motive behind trying to enter local residences,” the Fellsmere Police Department said in a prepared statement. “Officers are interviewing the additional witnesses and looking to acquire any information that may lead to the identification of the individual(s) involved.”

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Fellsmere Police Department at 571-1360.
