Milton “Mel” Edgar Schalois, 84, of Vero Beach, passed away on July 24, 2015.
He is survived by his wife, Sally, of 59 years; one son and two daughters, Kurt Schalois (Teresa) of Van Wert, Ohio, Karen Arold (Mark) of Tilton, N.H. and Kelly Knight (Dave) of Chapel Hill, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Paul Arold of Macon, Ga., Korbin Schalois of Van Wert, Ohio, Maxwell Arold of Tilton, N.H., Kase Schalois of Van Wert, Ohio, Kortney Knight of Chapel Hill, N.C., Kara Lee (Adam) of Atlanta, Ga., Kayla Crawford (Brandon) of Las Vegas, Nev., and Morissa Shrum of Columbus, Ohio.
Schalois was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of John and Warble Schalois.
He attended Collinwood High School in Cleveland, Ohio and was a member of its “Hall of Fame.” He graduated from Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio and was Vice President of his class in 1954, President of the Inter-Fraternity Council, President of his Fraternity, and a member of the Student Council. He was elected to “Who’s Who in Colleges and Universities” in 1954.
Schalois’ career was in the insurance industry where he held various executive and managerial positions. His last was Vice President of Loss Control with AIG in New York. He was appointed to the Bureau of Labor Statistics by the U.S. Secretary of Labor, was a two term chairman of the Board of Directors of the Premium Audit Committee of the American Insurance Association, was a licensed Professional Engineer, and was elected to “Who’s Who in the Midwest” in 1981.
He served two terms as President of the Van Wert, Ohio YMCA and was Campaign Chairman to build new YMCA swimming pool. In addition, he served on the New Hampshire Safety Council, Toledo Ohio Industrial Safety Council, Lehigh Valley, Penn. Safety Council, and was a Little League Manager. He also served as a Board President of three Home Owners Associations including Garden Grove in Vero Beach.
