George Stevens, 91, of Gloucester, Baltimore, and Vero Beach, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2015.
He is survived by his wife Betsy Morgan; children Tee and Michael Wall of Gloucester, George Jr. and Charrie Stevens of Andover, Elizabeth Stevens of York, Maine, and Amy Stevens of Charles City, Va., and daughter-in-law Margaret Lundberg Stevens of Denver Colo.; grandchildren Meghan and Robie MacLaughlin, Kily and Humberto Oliveira, Russell, Geoffrey and Tripp Stevens, Rebecca and Jarred Musil, Abby and Garvin Laverick, Brit and Chris Baldwin, Tookie Bright, Toby and Sarah Bright, Corey and Kirsten Weiner, Chris, Sam and Paige Ercolono; five great-grandchildren, and his sister Priscilla Rutherford of New Cannan Conn.; many cousins, nieces and nephews. “Dad,” “PopPop,” “Uncle George,” “the Iron Duke” will be missed!
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Sally P. Stevens, as well as his son Bradford P. Stevens, his brother Ames, and his brother Edward and infant grandson Nicholas Ercolano.
Stevens was born on Feb. 13, 1924 in Boston, Mass. he was the son of Phyllis and Ames Stevens of North Andover, Mass.
A lifelong car enthusiast and admirer of Henry Ford, Stevens began tinkering with cars at an early age. Although his family was in the textile business, his heart was in the automobile business. He brought a Ford dealership “Stevens Motor Sales” to Gloucester in the early 1950s. Later, he sold the dealership to his sales manager. He then partnered with two other successful Ford Dealers forming the New Bradford Company which built dealership buildings and mentored young dealers with their franchises.
Stevens was the President of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce 1960, 1961 and 1962, and served on the boards of the old Cape Ann Bank & Trust Co and Addison Gilbert Hospital.
Besides his family and cars, he was passionate about tennis, golf and Bermuda. He was a fierce competitor, yet a great friend to those with whom he competed.
He was a member of the Annisquam Yacht Club, former member of Essex County Club, Bay State Seniors, US Seniors, and Mid Ocean Club and the Bermuda Seniors. With his second wife, he was a member of the Moorings and the Riomar Country Club of Vero Beach, and the Elkridge Club in Baltimore, Md.
Stevens attended the Middlesex School class of 1942 and Harvard University class of 1946. He proudly served his country in the Army Air Force in WWII.
