Jack Nuss Grossett, 92, of Vero Beach, passed away on June 27, 2015, at Indian River Estates in Vero Beach.
He was born May 2, 1923 in Pittsburgh, Penn.
Grossett was a graduate of Penn State University with a B.S. in Business Administration.
His entire career was in the Chemical and Building Products industries, retiring from Koppers Company Inc. as the Director of Marketing for the Chemical / Resins & Coatings Division after 36 years of service.
Grossett became a full-time resident of Vero Beach in June of 1987.
He served in combat with the U.S. Army during WWII throughout North Africa, the Italian Campaign, the invasion of France, the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium and in Germany.
He fought with the 3rd Infantry Division and later, the 6th Armored Division.
He was awarded five Battle Stars for having fought in five major campaigns.
He was also awarded the Bronze Star for heroism in action during the fighting in Germany.
Grossett was preceded in death by his wife and high school sweetheart Helen (Massie) Grossett (Jan. 29, 1925 – Feb. 12, 2003). Helen and Jack have two sons: J. Lance Grossett of Eden Prairie, Minn. and Jeffrey W. Grossett of Granville, Ohio.
Following his move to Vero Beach in 1987, Grossett became very active politically. He served six years as a City Councilman and was Mayor of the city in 1996 and 1997.
He was also a past president of the Taxpayers Association of Indian River County, a former Board member of the Civic Association, a Board member of the AARP Chapter 1406, a volunteer at the Indian River Medical Center Emergency Room, and a volunteer “reader” and strong supporter of radio station WQCS for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.
Grossett was also a certified volunteer for the 19th Circuit Court handling juvenile delinquency in Indian River and St. Lucie Counties.
He was a member and Past Commodore of the Vero Beach Yacht Club and member of the Blue Gavel.
He was a life-long member of the Masonic Lodge 716 and a Shriner with the Syria Temple in Pittsburgh, Penn.
During his residence in Vero Beach, he served as a member of numerous committees and organizations associated with both the City and Indian River County.
Grossett was totally dedicated to maintaining the residential integrity of what people have referred to for years as “Vero Beach…that beautiful and unique Little City by the Sea.”
He was recognized as a man of Integrity, a man whose handshake was a promise.
There will be no repose or visitation service for Jack. His cremated remains will be joined with those of his wife Helen and buried in Pittsburgh, Penn.
