FELLSMERE — In the coming weeks, Fellsmere city leaders will be holding various meetings to gather public input before implementing new rules and ordinances regarding where and how adult entertainment related business can operate.
The Fellsmere City Council briefly addressed the three proposed ordinances at Thursday night’s meeting, noting that the purpose that night was only to set the dates and times for the required first readings and public hearings.
Even still, Pastor Dan Reaves of Fellsmere Community Bible Church approached the Council, supporting what he believes to be the Council’s effort to protect the community.
He noted that Fellsmere is a “family-oriented and wholesome place” and “I appreciate the Council’s efforts” and “continue as you are.”
City Manager Jason Nunemaker told the audience that the ordinances are meant to serve as a framework for how adult entertainment businesses would be permitted.
The ordinances, in part, set out provisions that prohibit obscenity and indecent exposure, provide for a general location, require licensing of adult book- and videostores, adult theaters and performance establishments, escort services, prohibiting customers from engaging in certain acts, prohibiting employees from engaging in certain acts, prohibiting public nudity and sexual conduct or the simulation of such acts.
The ordinances also set out distance requirements between such establishments and religious institutions, parks, and schools, among other types of businesses.
All three ordinances will have their first reading and public hearing on Thursday, July 16, during the regular Council meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. The second and final public hearing will be held Aug. 6, during that regular Council meeting, starting at 7 p.m.
It is during the final public hearing that the Council is expected to vote to approve or reject the ordinances.
The public’s input is encouraged at both hearings, Mayor Susan Adams told the audience.
