Grand jury indicts Fort Pierce man in Gifford homicide

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A grand jury has indicted a suspect in a fatal Gifford shooting that happened in 2014 involving two Fort Pierce men.

Authorities identified 26-year-old Roman White, of Fort Pierce, as the suspect in the fatal shooting of 30-year-old Cornelius Gore, also of Fort Pierce. White was charged with first degree murder and a grand jury indicted him on the charge last week.

“The wheels of justice take time, but with outstanding witness cooperation we were able to obtain an indictment in this case,” said Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar. “We are proud of our detectives and the work they have done to solve Mr. Gore’s murder.”

On Sept. 14, 2014, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of shots fired in the 2900 block of 45th Street in Gifford, according to authorities. It was then that Dep. Robert Sunkel located Gore with multiple gunshot wounds lying near a local barber shop.

Deputies Sunkel and Evans performed CPR until Indian River County Fire Rescue arrived and transported Gore to Indian River Medical Center where he later died as a result of his gunshot wounds.

Det. Chris Cassinari continued to work the case, ultimately developing a suspect and evidence that was presented before a grand jury last week.

White was identified by witnesses as the shooter in the Gifford case. Later, White was arrested in St. Lucie County in possession of a firearm. That firearm was tested and found to be the same weapon used in the murder of Gore in Gifford.
