Gripe with acquaintance leads to car fire, 2 teens arrested

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Two teenagers are in police custody after they poured gasoline on a acquaintance’s car and lit it on fire, causing the car to burn beyond the point of repair, according to police reports.

Katy Holland, 18, of the 6300 block of 33rd Street in Vero Beach, now faces one felony charge of vehicle arson. Her accomplice, Briana-Marie Figueroa, 17, of Vero Beach, was also taken into custody and faces one charge of second degree arson.

Fire crews arrived on scene around 6 a.m. on Thursday morning. They found a gas can and a piece of torn t-shirt near the burning vehicle.

Authorities questioned Holland who said she and three friends decided to “get back at” the residents for past “problems,” according to the arrest affidavit.

Figueroa purchased and filled a gas can and doused the car in fuel, while Holland lit a strip of t-shirt material on fire and threw it at the car, the two told authorities, according to the arrest reports.

The car, valued at $10,000, was declared a total loss.

A third girl was named in the arrest report as the person who came up with the idea and drove the teens to buy the gasoline. A fourth teen, not named in the report, was also reported present at the crime. As of Friday morning, there were no reports to suggest either had been apprehended in connection to the crime.

Holland is being held in the Indian River County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bond.
