Daughter accused of killing mother indicted on murder charge

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The woman authorities say stabbed and killed her mother earlier this year has been indicted on a first-degree murder charge, according to the State Attorney’s Office.

A grand jury handed down the indictment Friday on 24-year-old Cherish Perkins, who authorities say killed her mother during an argument.

Authorities arrested Perkins, of 360 7th Road SW, for the stabbing death of her mother, Martha Perkins, 49, of the same address, in April.

Perkins told investigators that she was hearing voices at the time, according to the arrest report.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Perkins called the Sheriff’s Office around 8 p.m. April 16 to report her mother’s death. She did not tell authorities the manner by which her mother had died.

Responding emergency crews observed the woman had suffered a stab wound to her eye socket with a large knife. The body was found on a bed.

The daughter told investigators that she both choked and stabbed her mother due in part to an ongoing conflict, Sgt. Raulen said.

Perkins told investigators that she had begun having negative thoughts about her childhood, according to authorities. She became angry at the victim because she felt as though the victim didn’t care about what she endured as a child. The report did not specify what childhood issues Perkins believed occurred.
