INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Winn-Dixie is celebrating National Donut Day by giving away a free powdered donut hole to sugar lovers on Friday, June 5 at all neighborhood in-store bakeries, while supplies last.
National Donut Day is celebrated on the first Friday of June and commemorates the work of the “donut lassies,” who served fresh donuts to American soldiers (nicknamed “doughboys”) during World War I.
The 78-year tradition was started in Chicago, Ill., by the Salvation Army in 1938 to raise funds during the Great Depression.
